CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF ALABAMA ANNOUNCES NEW TRUSTEES
BIRMINGHAM, AL (April 2, 2007) – Children’s Hospital of Alabama has announced five additions to its Board of Trustees.
The four new members are J. David Brown, Beverly Blount McNeil, Craft O’Neal, Marc Bryant Tyson and Jerry Oakes, MD. Harry Burns, a longtime Children’s Hospital supporter, was named an honorary member of the Board. Each has a special interest in children’s advocacy.
J. David Brown, III, president of Jemison Investment Company, Inc., is active in area civic organizations, including Grace House Ministries and McWane Center. He and his wife Janie have three children.
Birmingham native Beverly Blount McNeil and her husband of 37 years, John, have five children and seven grandchildren. She is owner of Portrait Brokers of America and a community volunteer.
Craft O’Neal, chairman of O’Neal Steel, Inc., is also an active community supporter, serving on the boards of The Birmingham Zoo, Emmet O’Neal Library and Birmingham Southern College, among others. He and his wife have three children.
Marc Bryant Tyson, president of Ready Mix USA, serves more than a dozen organizations, including the Crippled Children’s Foundation and Cornerstone Schools. He and his wife Lissa have four children.
Dr. Jerry Oakes is one of four non-voting physicians serving as board members. Oakes is the Dan L. Hendley Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery and the Surgeon-in-Chief at Children’s Hospital.
Children’s Hospital of Alabama, a component of Children’s Health System, is governed by an all-volunteer Board. As the only free-standing pediatric hospital in Alabama dedicated solely to the treatment of children, it is one of only about 45 free-standing acute care pediatric hospitals in the nation.
The Children’s Hospital of Alabama is home to one of the largest U.S. pediatric outpatient centers and provides a number of tertiary care programs for critical ill or injured children that are not available anywhere else in Alabama. For more information, visit www.chsys.org.
The Way Home
A hospital is no place for a child.
That’s why the staff at Children’s Health System (CHS) is dedicated to helping children (and their families) find the way home – healed and free from the healthcare needs that brought them to the Hospital in the first place.
A speedy return home often begins with a timely and accurate diagnosis – and pediatric subspecialists agree the imaging technology that has become available in recent years can make all the difference for infants born with heart or inner ear problems or teens severely injured in automobile crashes.
In 2005, Children’s recorded 624,084 inpatient cases and outpatient visits – and many of those cases and visits required the assistance of Pediatric Imaging. In that same year, CHS introduced its new 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner that provides the finest image quality while reducing x-ray dose to the patient. Even more recently, a new Pediatric Imaging Center was opened at Children’s South. The Center features a 16-slice CT Unit, an MRI Unit, an Ultra Sound Unit and a Digital Diagnostic Unit.
At one time or another, all of the Health System’s centers of excellence need the expertise of the imaging area. Some, like Hematology/Oncology and Neurosurgery, consult with the radiologists on a daily basis.
The UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Children’s Hospital, under the direction of Thomas H. Howard, MD, provides advanced, personalized diagnostic services and treatment for all forms of cancer, leukemia, brain and spinal cord tumors, Sickle Cell Diseases and hemophilia and other blood disorders. The Division’s dedicated doctors and staff treat 95 percent of all Alabama children diagnosed with cancer.
One of the largest and busiest pediatric Neurosurgical services in North America also is housed at Children’s. It is led by W. Jerry Oakes, MD, chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children’s and a world-renowned fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics.
The team’s fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons perform at total of about 1,000 pediatric neurosurgical cases per year – a number very few pediatric neurosurgical centers can match. All aspects of routine and highly specialized pediatric neurosurgery are available through this Neurosurgery at Children’s.
A hospital is no place for a child.
That’s something Children’s doctors, nurses and staff have known since the Hospital first opened its doors in 1911.
Children need to be at home, going about the business of simply being children. But when Alabama children need specialized pediatric healthcare, Children’s Hospital is where they should be – but only for as long as they must be. Children’s is all about getting children home. Because home is where kids belong.

CHAMBER INVOLVEMENT HELPS ST. VINCENT’S FULFILL COMMUNITY COMMITMENTS
Click here to view St.Vincent's Annual Report in PDF format.
Since 1898, St. Vincent’s Hospital has been providing compassionate care to the sick and poor of Birmingham. An acute care facility now serving the seven county Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area, St. Vincent’s consistently ranks among the most preferred hospitals in consumer research and specializes in a variety of areas, including oncology, cardiology, women and children’s services, orthopedics, neurology, community/corporate wellness services and surgical service. A member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest not-for-profit health system, St. Vincent’s annually serves 130,000 outpatients and 19,000 inpatients, and is the birthplace of more than 3,300 babies each year.
And the scope of St. Vincent’s mission continues to expand...
New North Tower (Main Birmingham Campus)
With the opening of the new North Tower and Professional Office Building in October 2004, St. Vincent’s added a state-of-the-art Outpatient Surgery Center, 21 new Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) suites and 80,000 square feet of professional office space to its main campus. All three components are housed atop a new 550-car parking deck.
The North Tower’s entry rotunda and four-story glass atrium is now the primary entrance to the hospital. Leading up to the entrance are green spaces and a 35-foot tall fountain featuring two water pools. A new entry drive allows for easy access.
One Nineteen Health and Wellness (Hoover)
Off its main campus, St. Vincent’s is looking forward to the opening of its One Nineteen Health and Wellness facility in Hoover in December 2004. In a uniquely integrated approach to healthy living guided by the standards and value of St. Vincent’s Hospital, this new facility will offer state-of-the-art medical services along with lifestyle amenities such as an upscale day spa and a full-service medical fitness facility.
Described as “a personalized, comprehensive approach to healthy living,” One Nineteen will offer residents of Hoover and surrounding areas an alternative to traditional medical care. Located in the Highway 280 growth corridor, the facility is designed to appeal to consumers with significant disposable income and an interest in creating a healthy lifestyle.
Chamber Involvement
In addition to healthcare, St. Vincent’s carries its mission into the community in a variety of ways, including active involvement with the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce.
“The Hoover Chamber has welcomed St. Vincent’s mission into their community with open arms,” said Marketing Coordinator Kris Boone. “It is this sense of partnership with the Chamber that allows us to provide our corporate services to businesses in the area.”
Those services include St. Vincent’s Good Health School, Occupational Health Services, Industrial Rehab Services and the Laboratory Outreach program.
Since 2000, St. Vincent’s has participated in the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Classic, an event staged to benefit the Chamber’s Lila Parks Scholarship program. In 2002, 2003 and 2004, St. Vincent’s was the event’s title sponsor. Primarily because of their involvement and sponsorship, the Chamber is able to provide several thousand dollars in scholarship for deserving college students from the Hoover area.
“We believe our commitment to providing quality healthcare to the community extends beyond our campus,” said Boone, “and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Hoover in future endeavors.”
