The Hoover Chamber Board of Directors has recommended to the membership a change in the official name for the organization - to a name that more properly recognizes the purpose and range of the Chamber.

The change is to simply add the word AREA to the name of the organization, to re-name it the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce, and to use the logo as depicted above.

This recommendation came about for a number of reasons, but primarily to encompass the actual area of membership - fully one third of the Hoover Chamber membership is domiciled outside the city limits of Hoover, at least according to a study of the zip codes of our membership.

Of course, some of the most used zip codes, 35216 and 35242, for example, cover Hoover, Vestavia, Birmingham and un-incorporated Shelby County, but as educated estimates go, one third of the members are outside of Hoover.

Also, this will help overcome one of the most common objections we hear when recruiting members to the Chamber - that of ìIím not located in Hoover!î In addition, for years, we have actually had people call the office, wanting to join the Chamber, but not sure if they were allowed to join if they were not located in Hoover. Of course they can!

The Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce is part of an organization called the Central Alabama Council of Chambers, made up of Chambers in central Alabama from Tuscaloosa to Anniston and beyond. Almost 80% of those chambers have one or more words in their official name that designates that they represent more than just their city.

Examples include: The West Alabama Chamber (formerly the Tuscaloosa Chamber); The Calhoun County Chamber (formerly Anniston Chamber); Bessemer Area Chamber; Birmingham Regional Chamber; Greater Shelby County Chamber (formerly North Shelby, and Pelham, Helena and Alabaster Chambers before that); etc.

While the new name and logo were introduced at the December Chamber luncheon, and met with overwhelming approval, to make the change to our Constitution official, it has to be voted on at a meeting of the general membership - that is, a regular monthly luncheon.

Obviously the next luncheon, and the first luncheon of 2008 is a very good time to make this change. We will bring this to a vote during the business session at the January 17 luncheon. The mayor and city council have already endorsed this change as well as the entire Chamber board of directors.
