Opening day for the Hoover Public Library's current facility in February 1992 was also opening day for The Library Theatre. Now embarking on its 15th season, the 250-seat theatre has gone from presenting three local and semi-professional shows to 10 professional shows each year. Rosters have included Nickel Creek, Richie Havens, Los Lobos, Leon Redbone, Janis Ian and many other big-name acts.
In the past three seasons, attendance at Library Theatre performances has risen dramatically, from 8,189 in 2003 to 13,455 in 2005. Almost every ticket for the 2005-06 season was sold out with extensive waiting lists for cancellations. Over the years, upgrades to the theatre's sound and lighting equipment, box office software and seating area have enhanced the theatre experience, while new automated doors and a theatre marquee have made it easier to get there. A new fountain in The Library Theatre courtyard provides a pleasant pause before and after performance, as does the Friends Gallery, located just outside the theatre. Exhibits are changed monthly.
Fine Arts Coordinator Matina Johnson and her staff are charter members of the Birmingham Area Theatre Alliance, participated in the Region 20/20 Cultural Master Plan, and are on the Summerfest Advisory Board. For more information or to take ?a virtual tour of The Library Theatre, visit
